Pruning the apricot in the spring allows you to rejuvenate the tree, improve its condition, increase yields in the coming year, as well as protect it from possible pests and diseases that could live under the bark in the fall. In other words - this is the first aid apricot. The article will describe how to properly cut the apricot in the spring and why it should be done.
Why prune apricot in spring?
Pruning is the basis of tree care. It is difficult to make it, and not everyone succeeds in this, but it is the trimming that allows you to form a crown, remove unnecessary, dry, damaged branches and lighten the burden of the tree.
Pruning allows you to form a crown, remove excess, dry, damaged branches and eases the tree.
If you do everything correctly, the fruiting of apricot will increase every year, the fruit will have a rich taste, inherent in a particular variety, the right color, size, shape. As for the tree itself, it will be strong, with an excellent immune system. Diseases and pests will be much less annoying him.
However, you can not just delete the branches that do not like, you need to do it correctly and at a certain time. Spring pruning apricot - one of the most responsible and important periods that affect the yield and condition of apricot. It is done, first of all, so that a beautiful and regular crown will form at the tree.

Very often, gardeners ignore the spring pruning, and all the others, too, not knowing what it may lead to.
If the apricot pruning is ignored in the spring, the tree crown will grow strongly. This will lead to early fruiting of trees, but after 3-4 years the condition of the tree will deteriorate sharply. The crown will be extensive, thickened. Inside, it will be almost completely naked, and outside, the abundance of branches will not allow one to reach the middle even to gather fruit.
The branches of such a tree grow thin, long, and it will always be dangerous to bend under the weight of the fruit. The fruits themselves will become shallow, their taste may deteriorate, since the tree simply will not have enough strength for active growth, nourishment of all these branches and simultaneous ripening of fruits. Fruiting begins once every 1-2 years, which gardeners do not like so much.
Since apricot does not "ration" the crop on a tree, all its flowers can become fruits, such a tree will be heavily overloaded, and it will be difficult to tear off the excess ovary, since the height and volume of the "giant" may not allow it. All this awaits the tree, which is not pruned in the spring, and, therefore, this procedure is extremely necessary.
What tools to use?
For spring pruning apricot, like any fruit tree, you can not use any tools. There are special devices with which the procedure is carried out and only they are suitable for this work, otherwise the risk of damage and infection of the tree with infections increases. So what tools should you have with you?
Apricot Trimming Tools
- Air or hand pruner;
- Garden file;
- Triangular file;
- Special paste (to disinfect the cut-off area);
- Sharpening tool for sharpening pruner;
- Means for closing the cut point (garden var, paint).
Before use, all tools are cleaned and washed. If the pruner or file the gardener uses is dirty, pruning can cause an infection in the wound of the tree.

Pruning apricot in spring is carried out at a certain time. If the tree has already gone into growth, the procedure can be harmful, therefore, as soon as the spring has risen, but the leaves on the tree have not yet appeared, pruning of the apricot is carried out. Usually this period falls on the beginning of April.
As soon as the spring temperature rises, but the leaves on the tree have not yet appeared, the apricot is pruned
Fruiting apricot is observed mainly on the spur, bouquet twigs and annual pagon. The problem is that the spurs and the bouquet branches live up to 5 years, then their dying off and exposure is observed. Spring pruning of apricots is aimed at maintaining growth activity and preventing the branches from being exposed.
Now it is worth considering how to prune trees of different ages in spring. If a tree is cut, on which there are no side branches yet, you need to remove all lateral processes that are under the trunk, and shorten the trunk by 20-25 cm. From the ground surface the length of the trunk will be 70-85 cm. This height will be enough to developed lateral pagons.
In the second year, when the side branches appeared, they are usually 2-3, those that grow at an angle of 45 degrees 25 cm from the trunk, and the center one 35-40 cm from the trunk, should be shortened. This is done so that additional pagons appear, because the 3 main branches for the formation of a crown are few. To do this, you need 4-5 branches - no less!
If the young tree has a lot of side branches (7-8), you need to remove all unnecessary. Usually remove those that grow at an acute angle, and those that are 45 degrees and no longer touch - this is the base of the tree. Remove the branches under the trunk so that there are 4-5 main pagons left. Now it remains to trim the lowest branch to a height of 60 cm from the trunk. At its level (and not at a distance of 60 cm from the trunk), all the other pagons are shortened. Thus, some of them will be longer, others shorter - this is exactly what needs to be achieved, but in terms of the level from the ground they will be the same. The center branch is shortened to 80-90 cm from the trunk.
Next year, the crown will be almost fully formed on the tree. And pruning apricot in the spring will begin with the removal of all dead and frostbitten pagonov. Then the branches are shortened again. They are cut to 25-30 cm from the tip of the twigs, so that the following year the crown will be even more magnificent.
During the subsequent spring pruning of the apricot, the old branches, frostbite and diseased pagons and all the excess ones, which may lead to excessive thickening of the crown, are removed from the tree. That is, if previously the main task was to make a lush tree, then after the 4th year of the culture's life, it is worthwhile to direct all efforts to ensure that the crown is moderately lush and does not grow much.
Pruning apricot in the spring is a very time consuming and difficult process. And although far from all gardeners like to spend it, this is an important moment of tree care.
Apricot crown formation takes place during the first 4 years of the tree’s life
- Apricot crown formation takes place during the first 4 years of tree life - this is the most crucial time, and in no case should it be missed.
- Pruning branches and pagon always carried out on the outer kidney!
- The formation of a lush crown is good, but it is very important not to overdo it. If you form a very lush tree, it will be extremely difficult to gather fruit from it.
- If the first apricot is cut after planting, then it is best to do it in the spring. Since he will have the whole year to recover.
- Pruning a tree in April guarantees quick healing of wood wounds, which were caused by pruners or saws. But all the procedures must be completed before the appearance of the first leaves!
- During spring pruning, the skeletal branches must be cleaned of all lateral branches, and the sections are thoroughly disinfected and sealed with garden pitch.
- All shoots that grow incorrectly or crooked, should be removed, if they interfere, it will make the tree beautiful, not just fruitful.
Many gardeners do not dare to prune young trees, because it can completely destroy the sprout, if you do something wrong, and even without pruning, the apricot begins to bear fruit faster. But it is the spring pruning of the apricot that makes it possible to correctly form the crown, so that over time it will be convenient to collect the fruits, and that there will be a lot of them every year, and not once in several years. Trees are strong plants, so pruning is, on the contrary, useful for them, and you should not be afraid of it.
